[QRD FERROX M5] Battery, Charging, and Power Management Guide

The QRD FERROX M5 features a built-in 800mAh rechargeable battery and is designed for wireless use through its dedicated 2.4GHz USB Dongle.

This guide explains the controller's low-battery warning, charging behavior, Xbox battery-status limitations, play-while-charging function, standby mode, and recommended charging practices.

If you prefer a visual walkthrough, watch the official QRD tutorial below.

1. Low-Battery Warning

When the QRD FERROX M5 reaches a low battery level, the controller provides a visual warning through the Q / HOME LED.

When the low-battery warning appears, we recommend connecting a USB-C charging cable as soon as possible to prevent the controller from powering off during gameplay.

Important

The exact remaining play time after a low-battery warning can vary depending on several factors, including:

RGB lighting, vibration strength, headset use, wireless conditions, gameplay activity and the condition of the battery.

For this reason, the low-battery LED should be treated as a charge-soon warning, rather than an exact remaining-time indicator.

2. Charging the QRD FERROX M5

Connect the controller's USB-C port to a suitable USB power source using a compatible USB cable.

For normal charging and troubleshooting, we recommend using a standard 5V USB power source.

Suitable charging sources include a PC USB port, an Xbox console USB port, or another standard USB power source that provides the appropriate 5V output.

About Fast Chargers

A charger's maximum wattage does not necessarily mean that it will deliver that full power to the controller.

However, for the most predictable charging behavior, we recommend using a standard 5V USB source. Avoid non-standard power adapters or charging equipment that forces a voltage above the controller's supported input specification.

If the controller does not appear to charge normally, first test it with another USB cable and a standard USB port on a PC or Xbox console.

✔ Use a 5V/1A USB power source

Because lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to charging voltage and current, the controller is designed specifically for 5V input and up to 1A charging current.

X High-power chargers

Do NOT use chargers exceeding standard USB power, such as:

  • Fast chargers (QC, PD, PPS, 9V/12V modes)

  • Smartphone fast-charging adapters over 5V

  • High-wattage USB power bricks

Although most fast chargers can technically fall back to 5V mode, their voltage negotiation may cause unstable charging or long-term stress to the battery.
To maximize battery lifespan, we strongly recommend using standard 5V USB power only.

✔ Recommended Charging Methods

You may safely charge the QRD FERROX M5 using:

  • USB-C cable connected to a PC

  • USB-C cable connected to an Xbox console USB port

  • Any standard 5V USB port (TV, monitor, docking station, etc.)

These sources provide clean, controlled 5V power ideal for lithium-ion battery longevity.

3. How to Check the Battery and Charging Status

The QRD FERROX M5 does not provide an exact battery percentage directly on the controller.

Instead, battery and charging conditions are communicated through the controller's LED behavior.

For a visual explanation of the different battery and charging indications, refer to the official video tutorial above.

4. Battery Runtime

The QRD FERROX M5 uses an 800mAh rechargeable battery.

Actual battery runtime varies according to the way the controller is used. Features that can affect runtime include RGB lighting, vibration intensity, headset/audio use, wireless conditions and overall gameplay activity.

For the most consistent battery life, reduce unnecessary RGB brightness or vibration intensity when extended wireless play time is required.

Conclusion

Understanding the QRD FERROX M5's battery and power-management behavior can help distinguish normal operation from an actual charging or hardware issue.

Use the controller's own low-battery warning rather than relying on an Xbox battery percentage, use an appropriate USB charging source, and keep both the controller and USB Dongle firmware up to date.

Why Doesn't Xbox Show the M5 Battery Percentage?

When used with Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, the QRD FERROX M5 communicates with the console through its dedicated 2.4GHz USB Dongle.
The controller does not use the same direct wireless communication method as a native Xbox Wireless Controller. As a result, Xbox may not receive the M5's internal battery-level data and therefore may not display an accurate battery percentage for the controller in the Xbox interface.
This is normal behavior for the QRD FERROX M5 and does not indicate a battery, controller or USB Dongle fault.
The official manual also specifies that Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One use the supplied USB Dongle for connection rather than a direct USB or direct wireless controller connection.

Can I Play While Charging?

Yes.
The QRD FERROX M5 can maintain its 2.4GHz wireless connection through the USB Dongle while the controller is connected to a USB-C charging source.
This means that if the battery becomes low during gameplay, you can connect a USB-C charging cable and continue playing through the 2.4GHz wireless connection.
Xbox Users
The controller's normal Xbox communication still takes place through the supplied 2.4GHz USB Dongle.
The USB-C cable in this situation is used to provide power to the controller; it does not replace the required Xbox USB Dongle connection.

Controller Does Not Charge or Only Works With USB?

If the FERROX M5 only works while connected by USB, does not power on normally, or appears completely unresponsive after a firmware update, do not immediately assume that the battery has failed.
First try:
Charge the controller using a standard USB power source → turn the controller OFF for several seconds → power it ON again → test another USB cable or USB port → check the controller firmware.
If the issue appeared immediately after a firmware update, the controller may be stuck in firmware update mode rather than suffering from a battery failure. QRD provides a separate Update Mode Recovery & Firmware Update Guide for this situation. The official recovery article specifically lists symptoms such as no LEDs, failure to power on, or the controller only responding over USB after an interrupted update.
The latest M5 firmware center currently lists Controller Firmware V1.71 and USB Dongle Firmware V1.35. The controller and Dongle are updated separately.
